The ZED Mariel Business and Development Program

The Business and Development Program of the Mariel Special Development Zone constitutes a strategic guideline for the future evolution of this area of ​​465.4 square kilometers in western Cuba, and its application will be one of the priorities of this economic enclave in 2019.

Based on the results of ZED Mariel in its first five years, and taking into account the country's conditions, the Program designs its development in phases until 2042.

The initial stage covers until the year 2022, and fundamentally conceives the evolution of Sector A, dedicated to logistics services, advanced manufacturing, Biotechnology and the Pharmaceutical Industry. This area has a Territorial and Urban Planning Plan approved in 2017, which regulates its design principles, and based on this, the Development and Business Program completes its future vision with a medium-term growth strategy.

According to the Program, in this period the Zone will have among its main premises the strengthening of infrastructures and services, guaranteeing that these are competitive due to their quality, comprehensiveness and prices. The goal is to consolidate a favorable business environment that encourages the establishment of new dealers and users.

In addition, with an adaptable planning that allows adjustment to external elements, it is expected to start designing management plans for another 3 sectors of the Zone, which will be dedicated mainly to advanced manufacturing, tourism, and the construction materials industry. .

The increase in the participation of Cuban companies in the dynamics of the Zone is also conceived in the strategy, which will strengthen the productive chain, promoting integration with the national economy.

Since its inception, the Zone has conceived its development in an environmentally friendly manner, and through its strategic guide it consolidates its future actions in accordance with state policies to confront climate change and the incorporation of renewable energies.

The Program also considers the social environment and aims to contribute to its development. At present, communities included in Sector A have benefited from the infrastructure works, transportation, and jobs generated, while in the medium and long term, a substantial increase in population settlements is conceivable.

In charge of managing and controlling the activities in the Zone, the ZED Mariel Office will direct the execution of this Program, with the challenge of incorporating the best practices in the management and attraction of investments, and of offering more comprehensive services to the dealers and users.
